It is true, “The World’s Most Powerful Leadership Principle”  is found in this simple audacious truth: invest in the search for the right people, convert them into teams who catch the vision, and execute the strategy and goals to RUN with the vision.

This principle applies to both businesses large and small, that for-profit or non-profit.

But here’s the SNAG,

…one of the most frustrating challenges a visionary leader will have to combat in the organisation is the battle against mediocrity.

Mediocrity means settling for less. Mediocrity means the inevitable departure of the best. The best team members, the best customers. An eagle leader serving under a pigeon leader will soon frustrate himself.

I’ve been leading an organisation for close to fourteen years. A challenge that continues to threaten the vision is the mediocrity factor. One of the greatest leadership challenges I continue to find myself experiencing occurs each time I decide to raise the standard of excellence. Resistance and resignations seem to be the snappy comeback of the mediocre.

Excellence repels mediocrity just as mediocrity drives away excellence.

Leaders who once operated in the highest degree of excellence became mediocre in the current context. Today’s excellence is tomorrow’s mediocrity. Therefore it’s important to keep pushing those mental boundaries.

Life by nature is progressive. Tomorrow’s expectations should make you dissatisfied with your current situation.

However, excellence is not achieved by many because it’s the potency of our character that makes it possible. Passion in everything we do is also important. Passion is the foundation of excellence.

Do you exude character?

Are you a person of passion?

Do you complete your work with quality?

Are you surrounding yourself with people who provoke aptitude and attitude in you?

Do you attack inconsistency and mediocrity on the spot?

Being good has never been good enough. We should continually exceed anticipations and raise the bar of excellence.

Most people think “good enough” is acceptable, but a person of excellence refuses to limit his expectation of life and business to just “good enough.”

I made a promise to myself; I refuse to be “just good enough.”

Excellence is the attitude on you that brings out the best in you. It’s the key to reveal your brilliance and give you exposure.

Success is not a miracle, it’s a product of the quality of work done right.

The battle against mediocrity is one you need to fight continually.

Fight against a mediocre state of mind.

Fight against mediocre behaviours.

Fight against mediocre beliefs.

Your ability decides your responsibility. Higher duties always correlate to higher capacity. The more you learn, the more opportunities you create. Personal development works hand in hand with opportunity your create.
The law of success dictates,  “first within than without.” Wealth creation works in proportion to the value you add, which works in proportion to your capacity.

Character Enlists, Ability Assigns

God enlists man according to Character and assigns them according to ability.
Have a look at this example in Matthew 25:15

“To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ABILITY.”
It has for men like; Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, David, Solomon,  Daniel etc…
Charles Kettering of General Motors once said,
“I tell my people that I don’t want any fellow who has a job working for me; what I want is a fellow whom the job has. And I want the job to get a hold of this young man so hard that no matter where he is; the job has got him for keeps. I want that job to have him in its clutches when he goes to bed at night, and in the morning I want that job to be sitting at the foot of the bed telling him, ‘It’s time to get up and go to work!’ And when a job gets a fellow that way, he’s sure to amount to something.”
Mr. Kettering was insistent in investing a multimillion-dollar powerhouse, in a man who would invest in himself.
Are you this person?  Personal development works hand in hand with opportunity your create.

Your Mental Output outweighs Your Biological Origin.

People could careless of your biological origin if you are the person who “delivers the goods.”
The essence of success is pinned one “quality.”
The quality of your work is the deciding factor on how much your services or goods are valued by the world.
Consider Joseph and Daniel in the Bible, both of them outshone in places hostile to their origin and culture.   Personal development is extending your base to increase your height and expand your exposure.
Mrs. Oprah Winfrey once said,
“Excellence is the best deterrent to racism or sexism.”
If you desire to increase in wealth, or in influence,  then increase your knowledge base (in the area of your work). Increase the quality of products and services that you offer others.
Be the king in your field.
Give each assignment your utmost for my highest.
Then you will increase in wealth.

Excellence requires intentionality. Quality work and service are uncommon because excellence is not cheap. His legacy withstood the test of time. His wisdom has been spoken about across the centuries. His name was King Solomon. He was an uncommon leader, a man celebrated for many exceptional qualities.

Today I wish to focus only on one aspect of the many of Solomon’s leadership qualities  -Excellence!
The wisest king of his time was also a distinguished man because of his pursuit of excellence. Excellence is the spirit that refuses to settle for the common.
In his biography, the following, among many is written concerning his standards for quality:

“Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.” (Proverbs 22:29).

“Huram (A man Solomon hired)  was filled with wisdom, with understanding and with cunning (skillful)  to do all kinds of bronze work. He came to King Solomon and did all the work assigned to him. (1 Kings 7:14)

Solomon had an unusual appetite for quality, the reason why he hired only the finest talent money could afford -yes you guessed it, he was an uncommon man of excellence.

What is Excellence?

  • Excellence is the factor that makes a man restless and uncomfortable,
  • Excellence is a spirit that refuses to settle with the status quo and ‘what is available,”
  • Excellence is the factor that makes a man restless and uncomfortable,
  • Excellence goes for what it desires and deserves,
  • Excellence is poison of mediocrity and a demolisher of complacency,
  • Excellence is the attainment of the highest level of perfection in anything you do,
  • Excellence is a mindset that will never permit you to do things at a level which others are comfortable with.
Far too many people are contently flocking around the multitudes of mediocrity while attempting to achieve greatness in life -it does not work this way.
Many people live as if excellence is a “gift,” only for the chosen.  This ridiculous sentiment is only a justification to maintain psychological slothfulness.
The spirit of excellence is a crucial requirement for being useful and relevant in the scheme of things. It is what puts you on edge in God’s programme and makes you a formidable force.
Exploits in life have never been a function of a higher educational qualification, popularity, gender, race or geography. It has always been a product of excellence!
If you continue to think, speak and act like everyone else around you, you will never excel.
It’s time to operate in a class of your own!

Leadership development is the cornerstone of all business training and development. Our passion at Ukuphila Leadership Institute  (Ukuphila is the Zulu word, for "life") is the lifting of leadership capacity to unlock organizational potential!

All leaders have a "leadership lid."  The lower a person's lid, the lower his ability to lead, the lower his ability to lead, the lower his effectiveness.  The leader's lid ultimately determines the organization's impact.  To often people are placed in top positions with low leadership lids, or not being adequately prepared for such positions, resulting in employee disengagement, job dissatisfaction, and a decline in productivity.

Many sought-after and successful organizations are aware of the importance of leadership development and also creating a leadership pipeline which all are critical to the success of the organization.

Since leadership has such a large impact on the entirety of an organization, preparing talent to hold this responsibility essential, this is exactly where Ukuphila, add value!
